Carnival, Gay Pride and a world-class art show: São Paulo knows how to party. (Na revista inglesa Time Out)

By Camilo Rocha

Rio de Janeiro will always be carnival destination number one for most people, but São Paulo’s financial might and metropolitan style give its annual festival offerings international and cosmopolitan flair. The city’s year is packed with events that showcase what this colossal metropolis does best: urban diversity and having a damn good time. São Paulo’s cultural calendar covers everything from art to music, cinema to food, and, as in the case of the Gay Pride, cultural affirmation – and that’s just for starters.

SP Arte-Feira Internacional de Art e de São Paulo

Where: Pavilhão Cicilio Matarazzo, Avenida Pedro Álvares Cabral, Parque Ibirapuera

When: a long weekend, late May/early June

Tel & website: 3094 2820, www.sp-arte.com

The striking Bienal building designed by Oscar Niemeyer is home to SP-Arte, Brazil’s only major national and international art market. It hasn’t stolen the Bienal’s limelight yet, but it certainly has injected the circuit and market with a whole new dynamic. Perhaps comparable in South America only to ArteBA in Buenos Aires, SP-Arte gains influence and attendance every year.
